Your Astrological Sign May Not Be What You Think It Is

It's a great conversation starter: "What's your sign?"
But before you ask or answer that question, consider this: your zodiac sign corresponds to the position of the sun relative to constellations as they appeared over 2200 years ago!
The science behind astrology may have its roots in astronomy but don't confuse these two disciplines. Astronomy can explain the position of the stars in the sky but it's up to you to determine what, if anything, their alignment signifies.
The Constellations of the Zodiac
The ecliptic, or the position of the Sun as it's perceived from the revolving Earth, passes through the constellations that formed the Zodiac - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Zodiac signs were originally determined by which constellation the Sun was "in" on the day you were born.
Early astronomers observed the Sun traveling through the signs of the Zodiac in the course of one year, spending about a month in each. Thus, they calculated that each constellation extends 30 degrees across the ecliptic.
However, a phenomenon called precession has altered the position of the constellations we see today.
Precession and Astrology
The first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere was once marked by the zero point of the Zodiac. Astronomers call this the vernal equinox and it occurs as the ecliptic and celestial equator intersect.
Around 600 BCE, the zero point was in Aries and was called the "first point of Aries." (Figure 1) The constellation Aries encompassed the first 30 degrees of the ecliptic; from 30 to 60 degrees was Taurus; from 60 to 90 degrees was Gemini; and so on for all twelve constellations of the Zodiac.
Unbeknownst to the ancient astrologers, the Earth continually wobbles around its axis in a 25,800-year cycle. This wobble?called precession?is caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge.
Over the past two-and-a-half millennia, this wobble has caused the intersection point between the celestial equator and the ecliptic to move west along the ecliptic by 36 degrees, or almost exactly one-tenth of the way around. This means that the signs have slipped one-tenth?or almost one whole month?of the way around the sky to the west, relative to the stars beyond.

For instance, those born between March 21 and April 19 consider themselves to be Aries. Today, the Sun is no longer within the constellation of Aries during much of that period. From March 11 to April 18, the Sun is actually in the constellation of Pisces! (Figure 2) See also Figure 3, which demonstrates the precession of the equinoxes from 600 BCE to 2600.
Your "Real Sign"
The table below lists the dates when the Sun is actually within the astronomical constellations of the Zodiac, according to modern constellation boundaries and corrected for precession (these dates can vary a day from year to year).
You will most likely find that once precession is taken into account, your zodiac sign is different. And if you were born between November 29 and December 17, your sign is actually one you never saw in the newspaper: you are an Ophiuchus! The eliptic passes through the constellation of Ophiuchus after Scorpius.
Now you really have something cool with which to start that conversation!

werner one:can anyone list differences and similarities between Leo and Virgo?
both signs deal with love; more specifically, self love; Leo shows this through his pride, and ego being on display for everyone, and Virgo by tenacious self-containment, and aloofness

innate pomposity/narcissism (Leo is more 'direct' with it and Virgo is just more self-contained, and subtle about herself; she feels no need to show her self to someone beneath herself but this is shown outwardly as 'modesty' and timidity; remember, we often pride ourselves on our ability to be self-contained and stoic. If you've ever seen a Virguy/gal who's just intently watching the world from a corner or with that relaxed gaze in their eye's and a slight smirk, then they're up on that pedestol again; I know many Virgoans would refuse to adimit this but the modesty is a conventional 'mask' that hides what lies beneath; 'still waters' right? that's the way it is; perfectionism is just the indirect form of narcissism.)
Snobbery/arrogance (Again, Leo is simply more direct with it, and Virgo simply shows it through action, rather than words. Virgo is 'morally arrogant' and CAN believe that no one, but NOBODY can be as pure, or as moralistically/idealistically/mentally equal/superior as a result a smug, arrogant character can set in on Virgo that will cause them to brood about inferiority and superiority....end results include some self-inflicted lonliness. Modesty is a way to gain narcissistic supply as well as overt displays of showmanship.....Modesty is just a more 'rational' way of garnering attention 'acknowledge my generosity and kindness; I truly am one extrordinary human being aren't I? Being able to be so beneveolent)
this isn't saying Virgo isn't genuinely all of these things just casting some light onto the character from my perspective; A human being should know that they can't be all good, and possess no shadow side...it's inevitable; you will collide with it for the rest of your life if you fight it. Accept it, and bend it to your will.
Long and short of it, Virgo has more ego than you think, but it's tempered by a rational and flexible mind. She/he despises going beneath herself/himself, and making an 'ass' of her/himself; this woman/man wants things to go according to how she designs them. She is willful, and difficult, but moves only when she deems it 'right' to. I was never a difficult child as far as behavior went, but if my proverbial 'foot' was steped on I woul
"more specifically, self love"
"innate pomposity/narcissism...the modesty is a conventional 'mask' that hides what lies beneath"
"Snobbery/arrogance...Modesty is just a more 'rational' way of garnering attention 'acknowledge my generosity and kindness; I truly am one extrordinary human being aren't I? Being able to be so beneveolent"
The MOST accurate of true virgo characters I have ever seen.
Virgo's service-oriented way is really a mean for them to feel appreciated by another so they can feel superior while acting modest. You think virgos are pure like a child emotion-wise and a service-oriented sign? think again. Every thought start from "I, ME, MINE" for them. They are the most selfish just better actors.
virgoexalted, your leve of honesty and self-awareness are admirable.
Iknow, I wasn't saying this to say that Virgos are class-acts; I was saying this becuase we have a sense of pride as well; now we can be stuck on ourselves every so often but are self-contained, and are usually self-aware which makes us remeber the generous souls we are meant to be; you smart enough to know that there is selfishness and greed lies in every heart, Virgo is no different; if I was selfish, I could've just kept this to myself, and allowed you to be ignorant to the truth, but I gave of myself instead, and alerted you to myself (now in war, why would a person do something so threatening?) In any realationship, gaining attention is really what it's all about otherwise you'd be alone. I don't know what Virgo did this to you, but he/she was obiously a bad one; there is good and bad in everyone; I wish try next time to be a little more open-minded and less ready to jump on someone.
Virgo at their very best is an tolerant, intellectual person....why do you think she is usually depicted with wings? It's a symbological part of our nature; we are ambitious personally, not practically; we want to grow and become the best people we can be.....some Virgos hold their thoughts to themselves, others give them freely....what I'm trying to say is is, get to know the Virgo before you condemn them on the whole. I was just trying to get you to see BOTH sides of our nature....seems not everyone is capable of objectivity.....lol Tongue
All of what we do is usually from an altruistic, pure and benevolent stand point, becuase we PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR INTELLECT, MORAL STRENGTH, AND IDEALISM; a Virgo that is true to the name is proud of his/her morality, and purity and can want others to learn from that and believe they too, can change and grow now mind you we may be a little arrogant about it, and demand that others follow our way as well, but we understand individuality and are genuine and pure in that regard but at times like ALL humans, we want attention.
I was trying to express to you our characteristics and how there's a tint of egotism to us, but our hearts are usually in the right place you just have to understand that. It is nice to know that every know and again, you're noticed for your gifts, you don't need a cash reward, just to be noticed that there is in fact something about you that is special.
There are virtues and vices to every sign....that's human nature at large if you're of the philosophical turn of mind....we could ivestigate the Virgoan character even more if you'd like, I can only give you my individual answers and truths, now how that relates to others Virgos might be a little difficult to express.
