Music. It stealthily pads into us while still in the womb. Mothers heartbeat beating in time, pumping life into us. Heartbeat of the earth. Listen to Native music and see if it doesn't spark off a deep echo in your soul.
It soothes us, lulls us to sleep. Comforts us in the pains and tumbles of childhood.
Now, is there anything so joyous? It fills the soul, quiets the agonies of heart break and embraces us with strong arms to lift us up in our victories. It accompanies us to work and play, leaving tendrils deep into our brain tissue and attaches people and memories to each one. A song played at your first kiss, the first time you made love, do you ever forget them? I didn't think so.
The deep growl of guitar and drum, the lilt of a violin. Someones voice taking flight like a bird on the wing. Each liquid note suspended in crystal, a single ray of sunshine behind the clouds. Something that knocks you to your knees in recognition. Something to get your swerve on to. Something palpable and real to link with to feed you and keep you from fragmenting. It's the gentle trickle of a brook in the forest, the dappled light through the canopies. The cry of a hawk, the roar of a lion and the gentle purr of a kitten. It is the clash of battle, the gentle sigh of a lovers kiss and the wind swirling autumn leaves around you. The moon, the stars and the sun. It can be bawdy, it can be base. It is the rope from which we pull ourselves back from the abyss.
If you want to really know someone, listen to their music. It isn't just a "hey, like this song?" it's more like "Hey, do you like this fragment of myself?" Take it as the gift it is and appreciate it. Truly listen. Not just with your ears, but with your heart.
