And that is an admirable quality. As someone who did not get any help from family growing up and had to achieve and do everything for myself, I can relate really well to this. I don't like being given things, I like to earn them fare and square. It used to be to a point where I would turn down a gift or insist on compensation. I have since learned that that itself is not healthy either, that you devalue someone elses gratitude and effectively try to control their desire to simply give you something or do something for you.
So now, I accept gifts or favors from those close when they come my way, but I do not expect anyone to do for me what is my responsibility to do for myself.
