LOL Sagigoat, I only ever seem to meet the unevolved men in their forties of any sign! I'm not sure it's fair to blame Scorpios on this one.
I'm beginning to understand the whole toyboy thing a lot better these days; it's less about their bodies and more about their maturity compared with men my age! lol

I used to be very worried about hurting the other person, but in my case I have come to see that as very flawed reasoning (sorry, I am a Virgo after al! 
) For a start, if you are both adults, you both know that relationships. like stocks, can go down as well as up. I finally saw, this last time, that it was MY responsibility to look after ME and HIS to look after HIM. And I realised that I can do this! I can get over hurt, I can sob into my pillow and eventually smile again, I can survive most things (and have). I'm an adult!!
I think I have spent a lot of time using my 'care for the other person' as an excuse. And I suspect looking back that it prevented me from giving my all (in case it went wrong) which of course sabotages relationships anyway. If you go in but don't give yourself fully, there is NO way to know if things will work out. And yes, if you give yourself fully (I mean carefully, but fully open to possibilites) then it will hurt more than if you'd held back. But holding back ultimately hurts more. It isn't honest, and I am sure you are honest, Sagigoat. You come across as earnest, a little fearful of hurt and very aware of how relationships can hurt like hell.
You know what? It's HIS responsibility to watch out for himself. If you suspect he can't do that, he isn't adult enough for you in any case. Seriously.

It happens to us all, doesn't have to be emotional abuse, it can be a thoughtlessly broken promise which meant the earth to your betrayed 7 year old self. My lack of trust was largely down to my Mum not giving me a little tea party she'd promised. I know it was that because however I rationalise, 40 years on I still feel sad about it! How bizarre is that? But it did enough damage to make me back off hurting others...
NLP suggests that our actions are usually with our own interests at heart and though I find that hard to swallow 100% I have discovered that my altruism is usually a lot more self-seeking than I thought. And I don't feel too bad about that any more. It's the human condition. Just own your feelings, look at your strategies and see if they are self-serving (ie "If I don't hurt men I feel like I'm a Nice Person, and that's important").
