The logic works. It's the same logic that the United Nations use when it comes to diplomatic relations between countries and I don't think anyone will admit that there's anything trickier to balance than trying to avoid war or hostilities between states with their egos on the line.
BUT.. I do not know all the details of your interactions with him and from what you wrote, I think what your friend lacked was the maturity to handle his Gem aspects. And maturity isn't a monopoly of ANY sign.

September Virgos are the most superior Virgos of the Virgo species. I mean Sept Virgos are funnier, this can't be denied. We're way more sexier, also undeniable. We can be judgmental, but shut it off whenever we choose. there are many things I have judgments about, but keep them to myself most of the time. Sept Virgos have better control of their criticism too. August Virgos don't have much emotional control, so as a result they don't keep things like cricizing in check. And if you want to have fun, well, damn you don't get any better than September Virgos. And let's not even talk about the type of monsters we are in the bed room. This should be a given.
I mean August Virgos are okay, because they're Virgos. And Virgos are the most superior sign in the zodiac. But they do not belong to the most superior decan. They are more like the weakest link. Don't be upset August brothers, not everyone can be dealt the fantastic qualities the Sept Virgos have. Just learn to live with it, and not think about it as much.

Totally agree with Seavixen, before you communicate take some time not to think about any of it, lean all the way back, focus on yourself only so you can change your vibe, make sure that WHAT you communicate to him doesn't come off as needy, right now you have this really big I'M NEEDY vibe which could sabotage your efforts. If you need more time suggest doing something together during the week and see how he reacts to that, you really can't base his true feelings off of what others say to you especially if he's only giving you the weekends which means he's not as serious about you as you would like him to be at the moment. I would think after being single for 3 years he's not ready to couple up with anyone, getting his feet wet so to speak as in getting his groove back, testing the waters but not really ready to get completely tied down with anyone. For the most part I hope the talk goes well for you, let us know how it works out.

It's amazing how August Virgos seek validation. When us September Virgos don't. We just kind of know how sexy we are. Now I've been with a few Virgo women in my lifetime. I was with a August Virgo, she was alright. Nothing spectacular, but good enough. Then I remember this great Honduran September Virgo who just crazy in bed. 3rd Decan, btw. Wow! There is no denying that August Virgos CAN be sexy. They try to hard to not be sexy. It's just that September Virgos are sexy without even trying. I for one get called sexy all of the time by the ladies, and I put no effort into it. That's just the way it is.
