As Freebird says, it's not about putting gum in a glass.
There were 3 scenarios, but since you're only fixated on the gum... and if you absolutely must have a response on this.. then yes, he probably found it gross-- and he's fine for saying so. NO, I don't think that's him trying to "change" anyone.
BUT- She was put off by the fact that it was an issue of him telling her not to do something (like she's his child or something), rather than just explaining that he found it disturbing... and allowing her to change her behavior willingly. If she didn't, then it would be up to him to move on.
Furthermore.. he was also embarrassed because TS didn't know how to use Chopsticks very well.... Any OTHER person would care enough to help her, instead of watching her drop her food in her plate and then judging that as a personality flaw.
Finally, the last scenario involved him scheduling her time without even asking if she had made other plans. At best, this was discourteous-- and since she didn't really know the guy, it was enough for her to move on to someone else.
SO.. do you see? WE(meaning Freebird, TruthSeeker and myself) are not talking about gum in water... or gum in a glass... or gum in a ashtray VS True Love! We're talking about a situation where the guy was stiffling her individuality before they even made it to the 5th date! I think the morale here is that she felt this guy was not accepting her as she is, and she felt she needed to move on. TruthSeeker acknowledges the fact that she needs a level of personal freedom in any of her relationships.
