Rome is a fascinating case study. The issues that factored into its demise are myriad, but several have been frequently repeated throughout history with predictably coincident results.
Click on this, you're gonna love it. Go to the archives. That guy has been doing a weekly podcast for a few years on the history of rome, all the way back to it's mythical origins, Romulus and Remus, the vultures, and all that.![]()

Many hours of damned fine, entertaining, educational stuff there. Good for long drives and long days at work.
I Looooove studying the history of Rome. Personally, if we ever rebuild a decent educational system in this country, I think a couple years of JUST the History of Rome, around middle school, would be a great idea. Let them see where so much of our system comes from... then learn how our founders borrowed from it and tweaked it...
... and then learn how Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Nixon, Bush I, Bush II, Clinton, Obama, and a few others... in tandem with corrupt Congresses, ran it off the rails.
Please try to refrain from kissing me when you start digging into that site and listening to the podcasts. it's that good. lolclick to expand

TMV, in the absence of a success against which to compare, there is no way to reasonably conclude that the country/entity in question did not simply start out on the path to its own eventual destruction and that deviating from those principals was part of that path.
I happen to think your theory correct. I only wish to point out that drawing indefensible conclusions only serves to weaken the argument.
And likewise, casting unsupported arguments does little to weaken the defense. It seems that we are at a bit of an impasse.
Human beings by nature tend to be weak and selfish creatures, easily corrupted. One wouldn't be wrong in thinking that the method of government chosen is a moot point when they will all be operated by men and women with their own best interests at heart. As a species we have not yet evolved to the altruistic standards that would be required for any kind of enduring success or prosperity.click to expand
