The higher the expectation, the harder the fall. Naturally, the harder the fall, the greater the pain.
Perhaps lower your expectations and let them be surpassed or at least you won't hurt as much.
But then.... are you growing? Are you becoming stronger and wiser, learning to live? Learning to love?
Unconditional Love should never be taken for granted. Rather, one should try to match it.
Such is a case of not only emotional growth but spiritual growth.
Evidence of conditional love is forgiveness, which is not throwing the whole thing away, but rather,
throwing the ill and hurt feelings away into the sea of forgetfulness.
To accomplish this, humbling one's self is necessary.
Can it save a relationship? Perhaps. But then, the relationship might not be meant to be.
Time will heal the wounds, but such is the time to look inwardly, honestly and be truthful to one's self. Do these things, and you stand a better chance of finding peace than otherwise.
I can assure you that peace is far greater than victory.
But again, you must be honest with yourself and be like still water and look deep within to find yourself. To rid yourself of the unhealthy things that bring you pain.

I think it sounds like you are tying yourself in knots with all this need to understand. Somethings we'll never understand. Don't think so much, just breathe through it and try to get to the peace and stillness- like MrF said above. Just be in the moment- leave the past and especially the future out of it (if you can)...
