I agree with neutro,no trust=no love.
He still cares enough to stand by you since you are having a baby and perhaps 'wants to' love you like in the beginning but can't because of trust issues.
As for the 'buried feelings',he won't open up unless he trusts you sufficiently.Also,he will make an attempt to trust you again only if he wants to.
In summary,I see him sticking around you,supporting you and taking care of you and the baby without having to/feeling like investing his emotions 100% this time.The 'barriers' help him stay safe, yet there.

with that said - I'm not really sure how to curb it, especially in younger years. I think age and experience is the only thing that makes you distinguish between the two. I'm still grappling with it.

You're gonna have to get rid of your gf before you pursue anything. If you go at her romantically and she finds out about your girl, so won't trust you and write you off as a player - no different from the rest of the men who tend to come at Scorps.
