There is ways of being direct without having to be insensitive. It's how you put your words together. There is being 'straight forward' and getting your message across and then there is being insensitive and adding unecessary remarks, opinions. Cutting to the chase is ok. If you're asked for an opinion however, you have been OK'd to say something possibly unpleasant. Even then I won't go overboard with criticism, just state it how I see it... 'it's useless' 'it's ugly' 'needs work' BECAUSE and possibly providing some good suggestions. Anyway, but my answer would have to be YES. It could be some of the other things you mentioned also but mainly it's the way we've been taught, directly or indirectly... that's how most of us have learned to deal with people.
