As Capricorns have a tendency of being somewhat expressionless, they can be perceived as boring and clinical. I guess you speak in a very matter-of-fact way, so I think thats where the confusion lies.
For example, my cap friend was talking to me about his job. I know that he's extremely excited about moving in with his male friends, almost like a child re-united with his playground buddies but when I asked him.."so, excited about moving to pastures new?" his response "I guess"..see a reponse like "yeah can't wait" would give much more away in terms of expression.
But each to their own I guess..You can't change people, you just accept them for who they are or not at all.

Bottom line: he was the target of these messages and it's the burden of proof for you to show/prove to him it wasn't you. Would be hard to prove it wasn't you since it came from your phone.
Why would he think that by texting a mutual friend would mean you are turning his friend against him? Some mutual friend you have there for even telling this guy you texted him.
