Depends on the religion, imo. Some are taught to fight for their beliefs, others aren't. Also depends on how much a person relies on their religion for a sense of identity.
Why does the religion matter though?

No. Look at Tibetan Buddhists. Or Quakers and the Amish. All are highly religious and vow against doing violence, even in the face of direct attack. Also in the case of Tibetans, they are on the brink of religious extinction by China and still don't fight back.
Even Buddhist have their limits when faced with extinction

Idk man.. how old is he? Shy or not, it seems he would give some sort of direct indication of romantic interest himself instead of relying solely on his friends.
