Give him time. They take their time with opening up. Compliment him even when it seems like he doesn't want it, they eat it up IF its sincere. Ask ghow he is doing, follow up on any previous concerns he's shared with you. Once he sees your interest is genuine he should open up more. It may be just as awkward for him. Find a topic that interests him then don't change the subject tile he's ready.
Texting is never as good as real convo and face to face is best.

I texted him a little bit today just to ask him how he slept and stuff. Just some small talks. I kept it short and sweet. I hope this is a good start?
It's a great start. Relax and just be natural. Don't text him with the point of getting a text back. I text with my Pisces man all day every day but it isn't continuous. It's enough that he knows I'm thinking of him and he's thinking of me. Think of how a fish swims to the top of the water then darts back down and around. They do it continuously but there is no set rhythm or timing. Trust he will respond to you when he can. Don't take it personal if it takes longer some times than others. Also don't bombard him with back to back if he hasn't responded to the first. Be patient but consistent.
Teasing me out of the blue by bringing back bits of past convos usually works wonders on me.
