Damen's response is not surprising to me. Not only does it obviously stem from a lack of knowledge, but also there is a certain stigma within the Black community around certain topics. Cutting and other forms of self mutilation being one of them.

I was in therapy for years and years as a child. And you know what I understood, nobody could help me and I was safer not saying shit, cus if I did it would have been 10x worse.


So idk what to tell ya

Someone who hasn't been through that kind of shit would have no way of understanding it.

In fact, I don't think people who self harm really even TRULY understand why they do it. They just know, for some reason, doing it provides some kind of relief.

It doesn't make sense...you're absolutely right.... It is irrational and counterproductive. Hence why the word harm is used instead of help. If people knew of other ways to deal with the way they feel they wouldn't be doing it.

I know this is wishful thinking with you, lol, but sometimes it's better not to talk out of your ass 😛

I have never personally harmed myself, btw.

But a very close friend of mine did for years. I can tell you it wasn't for attention and there was really nothing anyone else could do to help her stop. When people found out she was cutting, she'd just do it in places they couldn't see the scars...like her thighs and stomach.

She couldn't explain to me why she did it...she just said the physical pain it caused was a good distraction from the emotional pain she felt from a life of abuse. (Physical pain heals faster.)

yeah, abnormal makes more sense to me..

besides, it seems like that self harm stuff is more of a emo kid thing..

i cant think of anything i do thats considered odd or strange..maybe posting on a astrology board? nobody i know does this and they probably would think this is somewhat abnormal *shrugs*

And normal is seeking counseling or therapy if i had emotional or mental issues..not slicing my arms up
