Can Anyone Suggest Some Overlooked B&W Movies....Not Ones Everybody's Heard of
Film Noir
Screwball Comedies
Maybe Old Scary Films
Thanks
These Are All Good Suggestions But I've Seen Many of Them
Freaks (1932) Now There's A More Obscure Movie
I watch so many, it's difficult to recall them all.
My favorite Black & Whites involve Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, or Alfred Hitchcock.
Off the top, 12 Angry Men (1957) would be my FAVOURITE b&w..LOVE, LOVE that film - a cinematic masterpiece..xxx
There's so Many..
One of the most unique American films to come out of the 'black and white' era is Seconds (1966) . I can't imagine how it got greenlit, except for the fact that John Frankenheimer and Rock Hudson somehow got involved. It plays out like an atmospheric, Kafka-esque nightmare. Kind of gets to a stall somewhere in the middle and never really picks up again, but it's an amazing piece of cinema nontheless. Highly recommended.

Film-noir has never been my favourite genre, but one movie that stands out is Nicolas Ray's On Dangerous Ground (1952) - it's starts off in the big city following the daily routines of a disillusioned city cop - but takes a unexpected turn when he's sent upstate to help investigate the murder of a young girl in the winter countryside... where he also falls in love with a blind woman whose brother is the main suspect. An unusual setting for a film-noir, with an atmospheric score by none less than Bernard Herrman. Come to think of it I've only seen it once, I shall have to re-watch it soon.
Two other movies I can recommend are The Stranger (1946) and The Lady from Shanghai (1947) - both directed by Orson Welles in what I consider to be his prime.
