I think it's really sad. I went through a phase when I was a teenager where I had the opposite of this and used fake tan to make myself look 'normal'. People were always 'omg you are SO pale wtf' and I got sick of it. But I got over that and I accept myself now heh. I think all skin colours are beautiful and people tend to look best with what they were born with. Dark skin is definitely beautiful imo and needs no lightening cream to 'improve' it.

Nin, I agree with you completely. At least you were a teen then, teens have acceptance 'issues' sometimes, but these are grown women! Kind of makes the levels of sadness that much high since you'd think at their age they've grown more into themselves & have accepted whatever 'flaws' that may be. But it doesn't seem to be the case at all.
Yeah, I agree that makes it all the more painful. I feel bad for them, it's horrible to feel that way about yourself. And sadly, the part of society they are associating with must be reinforcing it. Which I really don't understand tbh, where some of these views come from. But hey, in Australia for the longest time having a super dark tan was the 'in' thing. Like yeah let's all go fry ourselves to leather and die of melanoma in our mid 30s, by which time we'll look like weather beaten 70 year olds anyway!click to expand

It's called marketing.
In the US whites are the majority. If you want money from the majority, you cater to them. Simple supply and demand. Then it filters down into everyday life and twits try to emulate it.
If the demographic stats were reversed, there would be slews of lighter skinned folks getting more tanned.
Is it idiotic? Yep. That's why I stay away from pop crap. It's geared ton the lowest common denominator.

Yeah lol I stay right out of it, I'm too light for it I'd just burn. Got burnt badly a couple of times as a kid and since then I've pretty much just kept it to a minimum. We need a bit of sun for vitamin D synthesis (and general mental health) but I have no interest in bbqing myself

Yeah, I get what you mean. It's still sad that these people will give up their identity for the sake of money & fame. Too many of their fans all over the globe & they all come in different shades..so surely their money isn't coming from the US alone. Many of them even have more fans from other parts of the world than they do in their home soil.
True, but it's where the money is that matters.
Beyonce probsbly gets more money from her sponsorships than her music. While folks in African countries might like her music, are they really bothering to buy Cover Girl makeup?
It's sad...but everything good in this world has been commoditized. Just a bunch of sheep following the shepherd waving money around...click to expand

Some years ago, I was told-- at length-- by a number of black female co-workers about "passing," and color prejudice _among_ blacks. It was quite startling.
Our boss' mother was very fair, and she actively discouraged his courtship of a woman who was jet-black, _and_ drop dead gorgeous. To me, as a white male, the whole thing was insane. "Let me get this straight. You're going to give up E___ because your Mom thinks she's too black????" Yup.
I know there have been a number of video presentations on this issue.

The craze to look "paler" has gone up a whole 1000 decibels in India in the past decade.
eight years ago when I left India to study in US, there were just a couple of companies marketing creams for "visible "fairness" in 3 to 4 weeks". And kind of lived upto their claims. One was turmeric based and worked like a charm on the highly tanned SouthIndian skins, the other was a melanin based one and did work as a temporary fix. As kids we were always trying various ways to lighten our skin tones by applying fresh milk cream early in the mornings or rubbing turmeric before a hot shower (turmeric is supposed to be a very good ayurvedic). In those days it was just the two/three products.
Now I return to this place after a decade and see that practically every fecking cream on the aisles claims to visibly whiten your skin. Not just every cream, every face wash every goddamned face product and its face cloth is aiming to lighten your skin by several shades just by its continuous application!! I thought India had gone crazy with its line of products from Ponds/Garnier/yadayada but when I was in Thailand for a vacation and hit up their convenience stores, I was visited by a very familiar site! Ponds/garnier and all the Multi-national companies had THE SAME products there too! All this "fairness" hype is created by the companies to make individuals buy more of their creams than of the competitors. I guess Asia falls under a certain demographic to find the same kinda creams in Thai as well. I was surprised to note that.

Sometimes it's hard trying to be who you are originally while the world criticize you for being different...This is nothing but media brainwash. I also had this problem wanted to be like everyone else not realizing that I'm perfect for me not matter who accept me in this world.

It's like this in the Philippines too. They don't only see it as being more beautif but in a sense a form of survival .
My mother use to emphasize to me all the time when I was younger to stay out of the sun and only have children with a white man. In her opinion, if you had lighter skin you had more chances of success in life and not get walked all over.
So in retaliation I would escape the house when she was asleep and bask in the sun ( Leo loves sunshine ). She almost put me up for adoption when my skin was as black as a chalkboard

The Indian caste system is just another form of racism against their own people (which eventually overspills into their perceptions of other races). I refuse to watch Bollywood films for this reason.click to expand

It is sad, but it is also reality. I remember being young, and I am not dark skinned at all, but my sister was always lighter. People loved her, flocked to her, gave her stuff, and ignored me and my brother, and he is like a chocolate color. You look on television and all you see in commercials, shows, etc are lighter skinned people. If they put a darker person in shows, they have what we call a good grade of hair or long hair.
I also read somewhere that models are not only staying skinny, but they are now doing a surgery to shave some of their hips in order to fit in Dolce & Gabana clothing....You ave women starving themselves, teens cutting themselves....It's everywhere and it's sad.
It took a long time for me to love me because of what I was seeing, hearing and experiencing.click to expand

Why do you think guys are making so much noise about these 'yellow bones' & 'red bones'? Plus, what's the difference between a YB & RB?
There isn't a difference between yellow bone and red bone. The terms were unheard of outside of the south. But since southern hip hop exploded, the terms got exported to a more national scale. My parents and grandparents who weren't from the south had never encountered the term until they moved to the south.click to expand

That's a myth. People aren't any nicer to light skinned women unless that's there preference. Dark skinned people aren't overlooked for anything. People will generally always find an excuse as to why they don't succeed. Light skin people who don't succeed also have a boatload of excuses as to why they don't get ahead, race being one of them.click to expand

What's a 'paper bag test' now?
It's some dumb Louisiana crap, they gets way too much hype, and thankfully never made its way county wide. The paper brown check was to see if you were lighter or darker than a paper bag. Louisiana being so French influenced was probably the most color and race obsessed state in the US. It's probably the only US state that most resemble Brazils racial structure. And I think Brazil has a down right terrible racial structure. But Latin cultures seem to be obsessed with skin tone, so you see that imported into Louisiana.click to expand

Everybody is going to have a slightly different opinion about skin tone depending on what region of th4e USA you're from. If you're from a small southern town, then light skin vs dark skin mean something to you. You probably would play into the intracies of red bone vs yellow bone.
A red bone would be someone who has more native American or Indian features.
A yellow bone would have more European features.
But most black Americans, regardless of skin tone, have European features. The term is pretty obsolete.
The real thing is that very light skin women use to be called yellow or "high yellow".
To be honest with you, the basis of the terms makes no sense. At the end of the day people are going to be what they self indentify as
I dated a Sag who was very light skinned, but she called herself a red bone. So really, who gives a shit. People call themselves whatever they want to

What do you mean by 'European features'?
Americans don't look at facial features or things like cheek bones. They look at skin color. The spectrum of your skin tone would be more "European" if you're lighter. Realistically, there has never been a real distinction between redbone and yellow bone. If anything the term was probably used in various places in the south, and due to the national media overlay, there was a situation where the two terms co-existed. AS a result people rushed to hastily find the distinction.
Most black people in America are new to the terms anyway. My mother had never heard the term herself until about 10-15 years ago. My grandmother who is over 80 years old had never heard the terms her entire life. But my family is not historically from the deep south.
Those terms only existed in the deep south, and again, national media exposed a regional term, and tried to make it national. Realistically, everyone is going to define them differently, since the terms themselves were loosely used.click to expand
