Why are so many people obsessed with light skin or being light skinned?
This thread is inspired by a post at the pisces forum & last week's issue of a black magazine, Drum (it's my country's weekly magazine). It is said that, it is on the increase for dark skinned women of different races to seek out helf from dermatologists/cheap 'street' creams to lighten their skins several shades lighter than their natural born skin tone..becoming lighter shadows of themselves.
3 female celebrities in my country made headlines for this 'new trend'. One paid A LOT of money to do a chemical peel that then lightened her skin over time. Her reasons were that she was tired of looking ugly & wanted to 'look white' since all the light skin girls got all the attention, in her opinion. The 2nd one opted to use the cheap skin bleaching creams being sold on the streets. These creams are said to stop the reproduction of melanin from the skin, making it lighter over time. That is an only 'advantage' though, because the creams also cause cancer, discolouring & hardening of the skin. It's rumoured that the skin becomes as hard as the soles of the feet in winter lol. The 3rd one is Indian, she thinks being pale is beautiful. She now even have her own line of skin bleaching products. I don't get it smile
International celebrities such as Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Rhihanna, etc have also been accused of bleaching their skins..I don't know if it's to appeal to the white audience or what, but I find it very unfortunate.

I think it's really sad. I went through a phase when I was a teenager where I had the opposite of this and used fake tan to make myself look 'normal'. People were always 'omg you are SO pale wtf' and I got sick of it. But I got over that and I accept myself now heh. I think all skin colours are beautiful and people tend to look best with what they were born with. Dark skin is definitely beautiful imo and needs no lightening cream to 'improve' it.

Nin, I agree with you completely. At least you were a teen then, teens have acceptance 'issues' sometimes, but these are grown women! Kind of makes the levels of sadness that much high since you'd think at their age they've grown more into themselves & have accepted whatever 'flaws' that may be. But it doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Yeah, I agree that makes it all the more painful. I feel bad for them, it's horrible to feel that way about yourself. And sadly, the part of society they are associating with must be reinforcing it. Which I really don't understand tbh, where some of these views come from. But hey, in Australia for the longest time having a super dark tan was the 'in' thing. Like yeah let's all go fry ourselves to leather and die of melanoma in our mid 30s, by which time we'll look like weather beaten 70 year olds anyway! Tongue

It's called marketing.
In the US whites are the majority. If you want money from the majority, you cater to them. Simple supply and demand. Then it filters down into everyday life and twits try to emulate it.
If the demographic stats were reversed, there would be slews of lighter skinned folks getting more tanned.
Is it idiotic? Yep. That's why I stay away from pop crap. It's geared ton the lowest common denominator.

Yeah, I get what you mean. It's still sad that these people will give up their identity for the sake of money & fame. Too many of their fans all over the globe & they all come in different shades..so surely their money isn't coming from the US alone. Many of them even have more fans from other parts of the world than they do in their home soil.
The craze to look "paler" has gone up a whole 1000 decibels in India in the past decade.
eight years ago when I left India to study in US, there were just a couple of companies marketing creams for "visible "fairness" in 3 to 4 weeks". And kind of lived upto their claims. One was turmeric based and worked like a charm on the highly tanned SouthIndian skins, the other was a melanin based one and did work as a temporary fix. As kids we were always trying various ways to lighten our skin tones by applying fresh milk cream early in the mornings or rubbing turmeric before a hot shower (turmeric is supposed to be a very good ayurvedic). In those days it was just the two/three products.
Now I return to this place after a decade and see that practically every fecking cream on the aisles claims to visibly whiten your skin. Not just every cream, every face wash every goddamned face product and its face cloth is aiming to lighten your skin by several shades just by its continuous application!! I thought India had gone crazy with its line of products from Ponds/Garnier/yadayada but when I was in Thailand for a vacation and hit up their convenience stores, I was visited by a very familiar site! Ponds/garnier and all the Multi-national companies had THE SAME products there too! All this "fairness" hype is created by the companies to make individuals buy more of their creams than of the competitors. I guess Asia falls under a certain demographic to find the same kinda creams in Thai as well. I was surprised to note that.

Yeah lol I stay right out of it, I'm too light for it I'd just burn. Got burnt badly a couple of times as a kid and since then I've pretty much just kept it to a minimum. We need a bit of sun for vitamin D synthesis (and general mental health) but I have no interest in bbqing myself Tongue

True, but it's where the money is that matters.
Beyonce probsbly gets more money from her sponsorships than her music. While folks in African countries might like her music, are they really bothering to buy Cover Girl makeup?
It's sad...but everything good in this world has been commoditized. Just a bunch of sheep following the shepherd waving money around...

Very true. I don't get why they are even considered idols, they just a bunch of hypocrites. They mouth on interviews about how one should love themselves, etc..but they then turn around & do the exact opposite.

Some years ago, I was told-- at length-- by a number of black female co-workers about "passing," and color prejudice _among_ blacks. It was quite startling.
Our boss' mother was very fair, and she actively discouraged his courtship of a woman who was jet-black, _and_ drop dead gorgeous. To me, as a white male, the whole thing was insane. "Let me get this straight. You're going to give up E___ because your Mom thinks she's too black????" Yup.
I know there have been a number of video presentations on this issue.

Wow, I've never heard of that. That's insane. I'm not saying here we don't have classification, but it never goes that far. Its more like calling a darker person 'blackie' or something along those lines in a joking manner. Real sad that we make fun & can't accept our own.

I saw an ad the other day on B4U, it was Shah Ruk Khan advertising a skin lightening cream for men. I think it's called 'handsome' or maybe that was the slogan, can't remember. I was disappointed in him to say the least. Take dark skinned beauties like Bipasha, Kajol & Rani..these women are great actresses & still get a lot of roles regardless of how dark they are, which should tell some that you can still make it & be adored no matter how you look if you produce quality work.

Sometimes it's hard trying to be who you are originally while the world criticize you for being different...This is nothing but media brainwash. I also had this problem wanted to be like everyone else not realizing that I'm perfect for me not matter who accept me in this world.

That's why sometimes it's good to not listen to other people or to compare yourself to other people. If you don't take pride in who you are as an individual, then who will? I'm glad you found yourself, brother.

It's like this in the Philippines too. They don't only see it as being more beautif but in a sense a form of survival .
My mother use to emphasize to me all the time when I was younger to stay out of the sun and only have children with a white man. In her opinion, if you had lighter skin you had more chances of success in life and not get walked all over.
So in retaliation I would escape the house when she was asleep and bask in the sun ( Leo loves sunshine ). She almost put me up for adoption when my skin was as black as a chalkboard

LOL @ your mom. Doesn't she know that Asian women are being fetishized by some? I'd rather my child be with someone that adores them, colour/race wouldn't be important if they are happy.

Just go and watch a Bollywood film.
The Indian caste system is just another form of racism against their own people (which eventually overspills into their perceptions of other races). I refuse to watch Bollywood films for this reason.

Oh, but I'm a fan lol. Yeah I know about all that. I also know how northen indians look down on south indians & other dark indians in general. I've even heard that dark girls end up killing themselves because they are refused when their parents try to seek out grooms for them. I'm also aware how a dark skinned man is referred to as 'kala' & a dark skinned woman gets called 'kali'. And a light skinned man is 'gaura' which basically means 'white man'. Indians are so obsessed with white people. I know 1 white girl married to an indian guy from rajastan & she said the whole town came to visit her when she visited indian. She said when she walked down the street, everybody chanted 'gauri, gauri, gauri!!' & many gave her gifts just for being white lol.

LMAO
I've only even heard of this since joining DXP. As naturally pale person I can't say that I understand any motivation to become so. Bursting into flames any time you enter the sunlight is not fun. Freckles are not always cute, being decorated with blue vein lines is not attractive, and any tiny little blemish stands out like a neon sign screaming for attention. Good luck finding foundation that matches the skin type and forget about bronzers. I won't even get started on the frustration caused by not being able to take a simple picture without looking flushed or washed out, or how often the fair skinned are openly mocked for it.
I can't see this as being healthy for a person either. Psychologically or physically. What kind of long-term effects result from this junk?

It is sad, but it is also reality. I remember being young, and I am not dark skinned at all, but my sister was always lighter. People loved her, flocked to her, gave her stuff, and ignored me and my brother, and he is like a chocolate color. You look on television and all you see in commercials, shows, etc are lighter skinned people. If they put a darker person in shows, they have what we call a good grade of hair or long hair.
I also read somewhere that models are not only staying skinny, but they are now doing a surgery to shave some of their hips in order to fit in Dolce & Gabana clothing....You ave women starving themselves, teens cutting themselves....It's everywhere and it's sad.
It took a long time for me to love me because of what I was seeing, hearing and experiencing.

There isn't a difference between yellow bone and red bone. The terms were unheard of outside of the south. But since southern hip hop exploded, the terms got exported to a more national scale. My parents and grandparents who weren't from the south had never encountered the term until they moved to the south.

That's a myth. People aren't any nicer to light skinned women unless that's there preference. Dark skinned people aren't overlooked for anything. People will generally always find an excuse as to why they don't succeed. Light skin people who don't succeed also have a boatload of excuses as to why they don't get ahead, race being one of them.

It's some dumb Louisiana crap, they gets way too much hype, and thankfully never made its way county wide. The paper brown check was to see if you were lighter or darker than a paper bag. Louisiana being so French influenced was probably the most color and race obsessed state in the US. It's probably the only US state that most resemble Brazils racial structure. And I think Brazil has a down right terrible racial structure. But Latin cultures seem to be obsessed with skin tone, so you see that imported into Louisiana.

Everybody is going to have a slightly different opinion about skin tone depending on what region of th4e USA you're from. If you're from a small southern town, then light skin vs dark skin mean something to you. You probably would play into the intracies of red bone vs yellow bone.

A red bone would be someone who has more native American or Indian features.
A yellow bone would have more European features.
But most black Americans, regardless of skin tone, have European features. The term is pretty obsolete.

The real thing is that very light skin women use to be called yellow or "high yellow".
To be honest with you, the basis of the terms makes no sense. At the end of the day people are going to be what they self indentify as
I dated a Sag who was very light skinned, but she called herself a red bone. So really, who gives a shit. People call themselves whatever they want to

Americans don't look at facial features or things like cheek bones. They look at skin color. The spectrum of your skin tone would be more "European" if you're lighter. Realistically, there has never been a real distinction between redbone and yellow bone. If anything the term was probably used in various places in the south, and due to the national media overlay, there was a situation where the two terms co-existed. AS a result people rushed to hastily find the distinction.
Most black people in America are new to the terms anyway. My mother had never heard the term herself until about 10-15 years ago. My grandmother who is over 80 years old had never heard the terms her entire life. But my family is not historically from the deep south.
Those terms only existed in the deep south, and again, national media exposed a regional term, and tried to make it national. Realistically, everyone is going to define them differently, since the terms themselves were loosely used.

I was talking about the part where you said most black Americans have European feature regardless of skin tone, that's the part I'm trying to understand.

West Palm Beach, FL born and raised (Stands proud...lol) My family has a lot of Cherokee Indian in us. When I was younger I was called red boned because my skin did not get chocolate in the summer time, but a dark red color. My bio father is also Puerto Rican which helped to add to the tone.

I'm curious, please tell me this..why are most black Americans so concerned about what they're mixed with when they're obviously black to whomever is looking at them. I've noticed this throughout the internet. Most always seem to make loud noise about Indian blood, this blood, that blood..everything else but never what they look like to the rest of the world.

@MrDefence...well she said people were nicer to her 'yella bone' sister than they were to her & her brother. It's not the 1st time I hear dark skin people complain about being overlooked, whether it's them who they are being overlooked or they are really being overlooked I can't say since I'm not in their shoes & really can't argue with what someone is feeling.

I'm not even dark skinned either.....See my picture!! I am considered to be a red-bone and my sister was considered to be high-yellow. She's much darker now...(Rough life)

Ummm no..you're not a red bone..just a regular ol brown butt

Dont be mean lol. Give an example of what a red bone looks like.

How much color difference is there between her and I??? Not much....SMH

true, but it's obvious nonetheless
we got jet black, dark browns, brown, light brown(me),red bone & yellow bones
Aleese, I get you, but do you claim your black side as much as you claim this other tiny bits of your makeup? Because looking at you I see is a black person, I dont see Indian or Puerto Rican blood at glance, yet Indian & PR are the 1st words out of your mouth. Like I said, I've noticed this with BMs.
What you need to undestand is, the black gene is always the most dominant..it doesn't matter what it is mixed with..it rules. Sometimes I feel like some of you are ashamed of your blackness or something. I could be wrong, but that's how it comes across sometimes. All this talk about this blood & that blood is kind of hilarious when someone is shades darker than some 'unmixed' black people. I'm not trying to offend, just trying to understand the train of thoughts behind the mentality.

here's a pic of a dark brown & a yellow bone
i notice that high yellow chicks usually always prefer darker guys & and vice verse
